News: This Monday the friendly match between Canada and Panama should intensify. The match had to be called off as the Canadians failed to show up.
After 36 years of abstinence, Canada managed to qualify again for a soccer World Cup for the first time. The euphoria in the land of superstar Alphonso Davies is huge, but now there has been the first big setback. After two canceled practices, the friendly match against Panama will not take place either.
The reason is a dispute between the Canadian association and the team. In a review the team explained why they decided not to show up. The players made demands of the association, but these were not taken seriously. Among other things, the players want to receive 40% of the prize money for the 2022 World Cup.
“We hoped that qualifying for the World Cup would bring our team a level of respect and financial opportunity that would raise the standards and opportunities for our country’s next generation of players and change the course of football in Canada forever. “
Another point of the players was the emancipation of women’s football in the country. “An equal structure for the women’s national team”, the design of which provides for an equal percentage share of the respective world championship prize money.
The parties have until next Thursday to reach an agreement. Then, Curaçao awaits the Canadian team.
