For the first time, a Swedish government is counting on cooperation with the Swedish Democrats. Ulf Kristersson is to be elected Prime Minister on Monday.

In Sweden, three parties from the centre-right camp have agreed to form a government which, for the first time, will also be supported by the populist right-wing Swedish Democrats. As the leader of the bourgeois moderates party, Ulf Kristersson, announced on Friday, moderates, Christian Democrats and liberals have agreed “to form a government and work with the Swedish Democrats in parliament”. Kristersson is now due to be elected prime minister on Monday.

In the September legislative elections, the right-wing bloc won a slim majority, replacing the left-wing camp that had previously ruled around Social Democrat Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson. The big winners were the far-right Swedish Democrats, who for the first time in Swedish history emerged as the second strongest force and claimed a stake in the new government.

However, this was viewed critically by other right-wing parties, and the participation in government of right-wing extremists led by party leader Jimmie Akesson would have been a novelty. Even before coalition talks began, the Liberals announced they would withdraw support for Kristersson if he brought right-wing extremists to the cabinet table. However, the coalition that has now been agreed is supported by Swedish Democrats in Parliament.

In terms of content, the coalition parties agreed, among other things, to build new nuclear power plants in Sweden. “New nuclear reactors are under construction,” Christian Democrat leader Ebba Busch told a news conference.
