Since October of last year, it is again possible to cross the border between the United States and Canada without major obstacles. Currently, however, travelers have to resort to renting cars, buses, ferries or planes. Amtrak cross-border trains were suspended in March 2020 and have not resumed to date.
Now there is good news for all railway fans: already this week the train Maple Leaf Services have resumed from New York to Toronto. And yesterday there was also good news from the west coast: from September 2022, the Amtrak stunts are operating again between Seattle and Vancouver.
Below is the most important information:
The Maple Leaf is a passenger train between New York Penn Station in New York and the Union Station in Toronto. It is jointly operated by Amtrak (American company) and Via Rail (from Canada). The journey, including waiting time at the border, takes approximately 13-14 hours each way. The dangers are only during the day.
From New York, the route passes through Albany, Syracuse and Rochester to Niagara Falls, among others. From there it passes over the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge on the Canadian side, where the maple leaf also stops in St. Catharines and Oakville. The train arrives at Union Station in Toronto around 8:00 p.m.
The maple leaf leads since June 27, 2022 again – once a day. Tickets for the whole trip are available amtrak.com from around $135 (~€136) each way. Of course, you can also travel shorter distances, such as from Rochester to Toronto. Tickets are then cheaper.
Operated solely by Amtrak, the Amtrak Cascades runs its full length from Eugene, Oregon to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. However, even before the pandemic, at least one transfer was needed to cover the entire route.
For the journey from Seattle to Vancouver and vice versa, it is necessary to plan a journey of approximately 5 hours. There are stops in Everett and Bellingham, among others. Entry and exit checks are carried out in Vancouver.
The Amtrak Cascades between Seattle should be operational in September 2022 RESUME. So far, only buses run between Seattle and Vancouver. The future schedule has not yet been released – and tickets cannot be purchased yet. Both will likely follow in the next few days or weeks.
Reconnecting was a dead end. In fact, the train should have been running again since the spring of 2022. Amtrak recently announced that it will no longer be able to operate the route until December 2022. This has been approved by Oregon and state transit authorities. from washington rejected as “unacceptable”..
Traveling by train in North America is always an experience. Travelers can also save a lot of money, especially on short trips, if they travel by train rather than plane. Although this is again an option after Canada.
In the meantime, there is nothing new Adirondack-Train between New York and Montreal. So far, travelers on the connection have had to change to the Albany bus at the latest.
