At the “Rohrmax Cup” in the Wiener Stadthalle, hockey fans were offered an international starting ground this weekend.
The Austrian women’s U21 selection created a big surprise. In a spectacular final, the young players beat the Belgian national team 3:2 to win this year’s edition of the “Rohrmax Cup”.
For the U21s, it was the best preparation for the European Junior Championships. Austria played in a group against Canada, Rot Weiß Wettingen and host SV Arminen.
National team A takes third place in the final standings.
In men, a local representative must admit defeat. SV Arminen lost the final against the USA with 2:3.
A large part of the Legionnaires was missing from the Austrian national team, as they were deployed during the Bundesliga tour of Germany. So, behind “Austria” in the game plan was actually the U21 team, but they also had to play without the players of the German club.
They faced stiff competition from Belgium, Indonesia and European Cup participant HAHK Mladost. In the end, it’s just enough for seventh place.
For the A teams, it was the last preparation for the World Indoor Championships in South Africa, which will take place on February 5. The U21 boys will only travel to the European Championships in Nymburg (Czech Republic) from January 19. They also have a medal at the European Championships as a clear goal.
