German national basketball player Dennis Schröder has found a new club in the NBA. He will join the Toronto Raptors with the prospect of a big raise. According to a report from ESPN, the 29-year-old will receive a two-year, $26 million deal. “The frost is coming!”, wrote the best basketball player in Germany under an Instagram photo montage which shows him in the jersey of the Raptors.
At the Los Angeles Lakers, where Schröder was under contract for the second time, the 2022 European Championship bronze medalist received a relatively low salary of $2.6 million a year. The Lakers couldn’t offer him much more for the new season – the NBA salary cap left no wiggle room given the expensive squad around LeBron James. As a point guard, Schröder has been a big part of the Los Angeles team lately, averaging 12.6 points and 4.5 assists. The Lakers reached the conference finals with him, where they had to admit defeat to the last NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets.
Schröder is also likely to play a pivotal role in the Toronto Raptors, the 2019 North American basketball league champions. According to media reports, former starter Fred VanFleet will leave the team and sign with the Houston Rockets.
Another German professional receives a new NBA contract: Moritz Wagner. will stay with Orlando Magic for another two years (and $16 million) alongside his brother Franz.
